Lezounery Toun began as an experimental laboratory at the Russian Language Department of the Armenian Teacher’s Training University named after Kh. Abovyan. Over time, the name evolved—from Armenian Republic Laboratory of Intensive Methods (ARLIM) to the simpler Lezounery Toun Ltd. (“Domus Linguae” – House of Languages) in 1995, following our separation from the University.
From the start, our founders sought more than just teaching a language. They asked: What does it truly mean for an educated person to know a language? How can students break free from memorized phrases and begin expressing real thoughts naturally and confidently?
To avoid learners losing momentum, we developed an intensive, highly effective course—refreshingly different from traditional approaches.
The design of our unique technique began in 1972, commissioned by the Ministry of Higher Education of Armenia, to create a rapid English course for junior research staff at scientific institutions.
The work drew on Prof. G. Losanov’s system, which inspired modifications by other experts, including Prof. I.Y. Shekhter, Prof. G.A. Kitaigorodskaya, Prof. T.N. Ignatova, and Prof. L.T. Gegechkory. Initial cycles for English and French were offered as spoken language courses for tourists.
While successful, these early models were limited training focused on set phrases for standard situations, which didn’t meet the needs of learners using language professionally. Our founders recognized the need for a new intensive teaching strategy, one that helped students:
